Who is eligible to hire an MDW (Migrant Domestic Worker)?
To hire an MDW, you must be at least 21 years old, not be an undischarged bankrupt, and have the mental capacity to understand and fulfill the responsibilities as an employer.
What are new maids?
New maids are MDWs awaiting employment in their home country. Employers select them based on biodatas provided by the agency. Interviews can be conducted via phone or video call.
What are transfer maids?
Transfer maids are MDWs already working in Singapore who are seeking new employment. Employers can interview these maids face-to-face.
How long does it take for my maid to arrive?
The arrival time depends on the readiness of the maid's documents and the approval of her work permit. Typically, it takes about a month if all documents are in order, but it could extend to 2 months if additional processing is needed. Her arrival also depends on the availability of the Entry Approval date issued by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). After arriving, she will need to complete a medical check-up, Settling-In Programme (SIP) and thumbprint appointment which will all done by SMRMaids.
Can I interview the MDWs even if they are not in Singapore?
Yes, SMR Maids offers webcam and/or telephone interviews with MDWs in their home countries. In remote areas, prior notice is required for arranging such interviews.
Must I attend the Employers' Orientation Programme if I am a first-time employer?
Yes, if you are hiring an MDW for the first time, you must attend a 4-hour Employers' Orientation Programme before submitting the Work Permit application.
Can I be exempted from attending the Employers' Orientation Programme?
Exemptions are possible for valid reasons, such as medical conditions or disabilities. You must submit a form to request an exemption.

What documents are needed for a first-time employer?

What are the insurance requirements for MDWs?
Employers must purchase medical and personal accident insurance for their MDWs before they arrive in Singapore. The personal accident insurance must have a minimum coverage of $60,000.
What is a security bond?
A security bond is a pledge to pay the government up to $5,000 if the employer violates employment conditions.
What are my obligations as an employer to my maid?
Employers must pay their MDWs on time, cover all living expenses, and ensure their welfare while in Singapore.
Am I obliged to give rest days to my MDW?
Yes, as of January 1, 2023, MDWs are entitled to a mandatory day off each week.
What is the compulsory SIP course?
The Settling-In Programme (SIP) is a one-day orientation for first-time MDWs in Singapore. It covers essential topics like safety and stress management.
I wish to transfer my helper. What should I do?
You must give written consent to the agency to assist with the transfer. You are responsible for paying the levy until the new Work Permit is issued and ensuring the MDW’s medical examination is up to date.
Can I employ two maids?
Employers can apply for an additional MDW if they meet specific criteria, such as having a 4-room flat, children under 18, or elderly dependents. Approval from MOM is required.
